Some things feel too personal to explain, but you still want to make something of them. West Clay turns that impulse into perfume. The tenderness of growing up. The desire to be someone else, and the relief of coming back to yourself. Our fascination with beauty, especially when it’s a little strange. Each scent is a small composition of those feelings. Something personal, made to become personal to you.
Making something of the invisible.
What would velvet sound like? Can a flower feel lonely? How do you bottle the peculiar sweetness of a summer 20 years ago?
West Clay approaches perfume through these little curiosities. Inspiration might be the unsettling color of a painting, a half-remembered dream, fruit split open on a plate. Something overheard. Something growing through a crack. We’re drawn to details that seem to have a private life of their own.
The craft is in translating them. Working with scent as a material, giving a feeling texture, weight, warmth. Finding the tension between something soft and something unexpected. Knowing what to bring forward and what to leave just out of reach.
We blend in small batches in Sarasota, Florida, making perfumes that invite you closer. There’s a personal world behind each one, but it changes when it reaches you. Your skin, your associations, your life happening around it.
A personal note.
I love the work of building a scent, finding its balance, and discovering how one small change can shift its whole character. There’s something satisfying about getting closer to a feeling through something so tangible.
Girlhood is part of that for me, and my relationship with it keeps changing. I see it in my friendships, in the women who have shaped me, and in the versions of myself I understand more kindly now. There’s tenderness there, but also independence, uncertainty, humor, and a growing sense of who I am.
All of that has a place in West Clay. These perfumes are deeply personal, made with care and the hope that they’ll mean something to someone else.
